A Short Trip to Kapil Muni Ashram in Gangasagar

There is a local proverb that says, “সব তীর্থ বার বার, গঙ্গাসাগর একবার” (Sab tirth bar bar, Gangasagar ekbar), which translates to “One visit to Gangasagar is worth a lifetime of pilgrimages.” Located where the holy Ganges meets the Bay of Bengal, Gangasagar is a land of mythology and spirituality. Here, lies the holy Kapil Muni Ashram, a sacred place for devotees seeking blessings and inner peace.

The Legend of Kapil Muni

Legend says King Sagar, ancestor of Lord Ram of the Ikshvaku dynasty, decided to perform the Ashwamedha Yagya. However, the horse chosen for the ritual disappeared. The king’s 60,000 sons searched through the land and found the missing horse near a place where Kapil Muni was meditating. Mistaking the sage for the thief they tried to disrupt his meditation. An enraged Kapil Muni then reduced them all to ashes.

Years later, a descendant of King Sagar named Angshuman, found the horse still near Kapil Muni. He apologised for his ancestor’s mistake and showed great respect to the sage. Kapil Muni, impressed by Angshuman’s sincerity, explained that the souls of the 60,000 sons could only be freed with water from the holy Ganges River.

Many generations later, King Bhagirath, another descendant of Sagar, prayed tirelessly for the Ganges to come down from the heavens. Finally, his prayers were answered, and the holy river flowed onto Earth. Bhagirath then used the Ganges water to perform a ceremony, freeing the souls of his ancestors.

As a tribute to King Bhagirath’s devotion, the river was named Bhagirathi. The place where the Ganges meets the ocean was named “Sagar” after King Sagar, and the island there is called “Sagar Dweep.” This is why a dip in the sacred waters of Gangasagar is believed to cleanse sins and bring spiritual peace.
